'Unauthorized' online casinos sites operating from Italy's borders are drawing the attention of the government. Internet Service Providers will soon have to initiate filters against these online casinos. Fines of Euro 30,000 to Euro 180,000 (US $36,000 to US $215,000) will be placed on these online gambling sites if they do not comply with these orders. Currently, only six online casinos are authorized to operate according to Italian law.

The purpose of these initiatives is to help break the state gambling monopoly, and the Italian government has a true interest in flexing control over this industry. With 1.8 million online casinos gamblers recorded last year and along with national revenues of more than $1.4 billion, it is easy to understand why. Online casinos seem to be generating great revenue in this sunny, beautiful country. The online casinos in Italy have been concerning two main groups – the European Betting Association and Remote Gambling Association. They represent the interests of many major betting companies.

In November, a joint resolution was established, and the parties involved (namely the two aforementioned associations) claim that they will violate no more than five categories of European Community rules for legislation. One thing is for sure – this matter will not be solved overnight. Online casinos operators will most likely disagree to these filters at their first introduction. Only time will tell what the online casinos industry will eventually look like in Italy.
